Autocross
Learning to autocross is a great way to develop superior car control skills in a safe, supervised atmosphere without costing you an arm and a leg.
You get
to drive -- one car at a time -- around a miniature road course
laid out with traffic cones. Each run is only about 60 seconds
long so wear and tear to your car is less than you'd experience
on a typical drive to work (depending on how you drive <g>).
The goal is to do it as quickly as you can, but penalties are assessed for not navigating the course properly so accuracy counts as much or more than speed.
There is no "practice" driving -- only walk throughs are allowed -- so an additional premium is placed on being able to visualize the course in your mind before you ever drive it. After walking it, you get three chances to drive it as quickly and precisely as possible and your best time/score is compared against other drivers in similar cars to see who wins!
The events are open to licensed drivers of all ages and all you need to enter is a valid driver's license, a safe car, and a great attitude. All the local sanctioning bodies will even loan you a helmet if you don't yet own one.
There are a lot of groups and car clubs that put on autocrosses throughout the year and we're blessed to have several of the best organizations right here in the Rocky Mountain area. Visit their websites for more information about how you can get involved. Come out and watch the first time, then enter the next time -- you won't regret it!
